Modified teacher eval‎uation

 Teacher eval‎uation system is recently adopted in Korean schools. That system is operated under the way how teaching abilities of teachers are assessed by vice-principal, principal students and even students’ parents. However, it has been caught with controversy because there are both advantages and disadvantages of accepting this system in the school.

There are two advantages of Teacher eval‎uation system. First of all, quality of teachers’ instruction is higher than ever because the teachers is able to notice weather their own class is effective or not for the students and try to improve the way of teaching. Secondly, it is said that teachers have a duty to offer good services to the students when we consider the school as the capitalistic economy system. However, I have a different opinion against this business viewpoint. The relationship between teachers and students in the classroom are very complex beyond the relation between clerks and customers. There are continual interactions, memories, and educational worth or change among them. So, I thought that this second idea is not belonged to one of the advantages of teacher eval‎uation system.

In the contrary, there are several disadvantages. Firstly, students might reflect their subjective opinions on the eval‎uation. For example, if a teacher gave the low grade to a student before, the teacher could also get low score on the teacher eval‎uation because the student used the teacher eval‎uation as a tool of revenge. Next, teachers would not carry out their own teaching method for the student even if those students are incorrect. That is, teachers would become a bystander to get the higher score on the teacher eval‎uation.  

Although teacher eval‎uation system could be effective in making teachers improve their teaching quality, the eval‎uation system has to be modified because of above side effects. So, it would be better to offer objective questionnaires for teacher assessment. Following the specific direction or intension to eval‎uate in the questions, students’ individual emotion toward the teacher will not intervene in the eval‎uation. Besides, the number of open classes for eval‎uation has to increase because students, parents or principals should get a chance to take the lecture for exact eval‎uation.

In short, if teacher eval‎uation system is modified with appropriate ways it makes teachers improve their own class as teachers consider the students’ needs from the eval‎uation results!
